Handiwork key to good swing
September 9, 2009 - Lee Martin

The role the hands play in the golf swing are of the utmost importance.

Your hands are the only communication that you have with the golf club.

Your hands tell you what you feel during the swing.

The left hand (right for left-handed players) keeps the club head on the right swing plane.

The position of your left hand through the swing will dictate the position of the clubface at the top of your backswing and at impact.

If you swing your left arm back and through in a pendulum motion without holding on to a club, you will feel and see the natural motion of your left hand and arm during the swing.

During the swing, the back of your left hand faces the target at impact, but only for a millisecond.

This natural rotation will allow you to finish your swing on balance.

The right hand is also key as it is your power hand. I like to see the palm of the right hand facing the target at the address position.

The best way to learn this is to place your left thumb at 1 o’clock and your right thumb at 11 o’clock on the grip.

There are other important elements to the swing, but the proper use of the hands with the proper grip determines how well you strike the ball.
