There are ways to overcome 'death moves'
April 16, 2008 - Lee Martin

There are two moves in the golf swing considered "death moves."

The first one is the reverse pivot. The major cause of the reverse pivot is trying to stay over the ball on the backswing. Staying over the ball will usually cause you to increase the weight on your forward foot.

When this forward transfer of weight happens, you have to shift your weight to your rear foot on the start of the downswing, which will cause errant shots and a lack of power.

The best way to fix or get rid of the reverse pivot is to make sure you have the correct address position.

Your address position should begin with your weight evenly distributed on both feet with your head positioned behind the ball.

As you start the clubhead away from the ball, your forward shoulder follows the clubhead with most of your weight transferring to the inside of your trailing leg and foot.

This position at the top of your backswing will allow you to achieve maximum power on the downswing.

The second "death move" is growing on the backswing.

As you take the clubhead away from the ball and your spine angle changes, allowing your head to get further from the ball, you can't make solid contact with the ball unless you return to your original address position.

By growing, you change your posture, balance and swing plane, and will have no consistency in your shots.

To correct this problem of growing, maintain your spine angle or posture on the backswing and also on the downswing.

Your head should remain in the same position on the backswing and also on the downswing for consistent shots.
