Controlling the tempo leads to a proper swing
May 28, 2008 - Lee Martin

The more control you have over your tempo, the more consistent your swing will be, especially under pressure.

There are three types of tempo: slow, medium and fast.

Most golfers' tempo usually matches their personality. As an example, people who talk fast usually swing fast.

Golfers with quick, aggressive swings are more apt to have swing problems because their tempo is so fast they never get in a solid set position at the top of their backswing and are rarely on balance.

When you are not in a solid finished and set position at the top of your backswing, it is very difficult to start your downswing properly and finish your swing.

There is an old saying: If you have a fast backswing, you better have a fat wallet!

Personally, I think a slow-to-medium tempo is the best. A slow-to-medium swing tempo will allow you to be smoother throughout your swing and will allow you to finish your backswing as well as getting to a balanced finish.

To check your swing tempo, start your backswing with your left shoulder smoothly (right shoulder for left-handed) and coil against the inside of your trailing leg. Feel that your upper back is facing your target to a set position behind the ball.

Start your downswing smoothly by rotating your hips to build up your arm and hand speed to a balanced finish.

To achieve your maximum clubhead speed, keep your tempo at a maximum of 85 percent.
