Shoulders Key To Avoiding the Fat Shots
September 8, 2004 - Lee Martin

Maintaining your spine angle or posture throughout your swing is essential to correcting fat shots.

Hitting shots fat is usually a result of improper shoulder movement during the backswing or downswing. More often, it happens on the downswing.

As the downswing starts with your lower body, the right shoulder must stay up (the opposite for left-handers) and allow your hands and arms to swing through the hitting area before your shoulder comes through.

Even though your shoulder comes under during your downswing, try not to let your right shoulder go lower than the position it is when you are addressing the ball.

A good drill is to grip the club properly, take your left hand off of the club and swing a few times just with your right hand, and just brush the ground during the swing.

This will show you the proper movement of your right shoulder during the golf swing.
