When chipping, keep your hands ahead of the ball September 10, 2008 - Bob E. Smith |

There are two common reasons for a player to chunk a chip shot. The first — a player either makes a downswing that is too much from the inside. The other reason — the player thinks the body must stay rigid during the shot, which results in the hands being too active. This is one way to avoid chunking that next chip. At address, turn both feet slightly toward the target. Your feet should now be pointed inches in front of the ball. The ball should be off your right toe. Moving it an inch or two in back of your toes can also help, depending on the loft of the club. Set up with your weight forward on your left side. Really lean into your left foot (right foot for lefties). This will get your center forward and your hands and body ahead of the ball. Your sternum is now inches in front of the ball. Swing the club back and through. Similar to a putting stroke, you must keep your hands out of this shot. Do not roll your wrists back and through. Bump your hips forward and slightly toward the target, turning your right hip ever so slightly at impact which helps you contact the ball first. |
