The British Open is always a great tournament. I wish the USGA would quit tricking up already tough courses to the point where they are almost unplayable and do like the R&A does with the British Open, ..which is to just play the courses as they are. If they have great weather, some of their courses play easy. But if the weather is poor (as it often is) the courses play super tough.

The USGA formula for creating a tough venue introduces the luck factor into the tournament far too much. Withholding water from the greens on 480 yard 4's and 235 yd par 3's is goofy. What's wrong with someone winning a US Open with a 12 under par score???

To me, each major has it's own distinct quality (except maybe the PGA).

As you said, the R & A depends on the weather to make their championship a challenge. If they don't get weather, things get too easy.

The USGA sometimes goes a little overboard, however they try and protect the concept of par against the best players and the best technology money can buy. Also, they try and do it at historic courses, like Shinnecock, where the distances do little to protect the course from the pro's.

Augusta National has been changed alot to protect it's integrity from the pro's.

To me, the PGA is about the pro's putting on a show at one of their perfectly groomed 7500 yd stadium courses.
