Golf's Similarities to Other Sports
- Lee Martin

Baseball players and tennis players usually make good golfers. Why is this? There are a number of reasons that makes this statement true.

Baseball and tennis players have exceptional balance. They keep their head behind the ball at impact and they are looking at the ball at impact. They swing through the ball, not at it. They finish their swinging motion and stay on plane throughout the stroke.

The baseball swing is more like the golf swing because both hands are holding on to the bat and basically have the same motion through the swing. In other words the hands and arms cross over through impact. In
both sports the lower body starts the swing through the ball with the shoulders staying turned as long as possible so as to achieve maximum power at impact.

The biggest difference between the two sports is that in baseball the swing is more of an upward motion and the weight is on the rear foot at impact. In golf your weight is moving toward your front foot and that is
where you end up when you finish your swing. Also in golf contact with the ball is a descending blow except with the driver where contact with the ball is made just at the start of the upswing.

Understanding the similarities and differences of the various sports that you have played will make you a better golfer.
